Town House School
The Town House School, 1900, evokes the nostalgia of a typical New England one-room school house which was in operation until 1951. It was given to the Society in 1955 and serves as the library and research center for Kennebunkport history. The School House also houses many of the Society’s collections and offers changing exhibitions.
The Old Jail Cells
Located to the left of The Town House School, the old jail cells speak eloquently for themselves. They graphically demonstrate that even a short stay would be considered “hard time” by today’s prison standards. The cells were purchased in 1898 and installed in a local mercahnt’s building to whom the town paid rent. In 1913, they were moved to the Village Fire Station and remained until they were given to the Society.
